Belinda, Jared and Jessica Small

  1. Belinda, Jared and Jessica Small Says:
After a bit of a late dash to find a Midwife I was given the contact details of Kelly who was able to take me on due to her recent move back to the Manawatu. While Kelly was not my first choice for a midwife, I quickly found that she exceeded all my expectations.

Kelly is a professional, that is easy to see, but equally as important is her friendly and caring nature. Being pregnant for the first time can be stressful, but when dealing with Kelly I realised it can be a whole lot of fun too. During my pregnancy my husband and I found reassurance in knowing that Kelly could be relied upon and that she was always easily contactable.

Thank you Kelly for all your work over the last ten months. Be sure to save me a spot when it comes to our second!

After leaving it late to find a midwife I was fortunate enough to come across Kelly’s details through the Midwife4U website, and fortunately having just relocated to Palmerston North, she was able to take me on. Being a first time mum I had no expectations and everything was a learning curve. I was extremely lucky to have found a professional, caring and supportive midwife like Kelly, who ensured I was prepared as possible for the birth of my son.

Unfortunately when the time came I had various complications which resulted in my son being born by emergency caesarian and ventouse delivery. My problems didn’t end there, due to various factors I was unable to produce adequate breast milk and this is where Kelly’s professionalism, compassion and support was invaluable. Kelly went out of her way to assist me in finding treatments both mainstream medical and holistic to help with my particular problem and was extremely supportive throughout what was a very difficult time.

I highly recommend Kelly to any prospective parents who are looking for an easygoing and knowledgeable midwife who will make them feel at ease and show extreme patience, even when you are screaming “I can’t do this” in the middle of labour!

Again thank you so much for all you have done for me and Ben.

Take Care
Victoria

Babies freezing in cheap clothing

By JANINE RANKIN – Manawatu Standard | Thursday, 10 July 2008

Increasing use of man- made materials, instead of old- fashioned wool, means many babies are not getting the sort of heat their young bodies need.

“It is pretty horrifying,” says midwife Kelly Manninen.

“I probably see it once a month, it might be in a state house, with no heating, and no woollens for the baby, and it’s just not a safe environment.”

It’s partly poverty and partly ignorance, she says, that’s seen a decline in parents using woollen clothes and blankets.

“We see babies who are cold and suffering.”

She says a lot of knowledge about baby care has been lost, because grandparents are busy and often separated from young parents who just don’t know that natural fibres are best for babies.

“They are trying, but just don’t have the resources sometimes.”

Price was a barrier when a woollen singlet might cost $20, but cotton singlets could be picked up for $2.

“And we hardly ever see woollen blankets. It’s all polar fleece and fake mink that looks pretty but doesn’t do a good job.”

Colleague Annie Kinloch says babies struggling for energy to keep warm are slower to thrive and put on weight.

And the risk with synthetics is not just that babies get cold, but they can also get too hot under layers that don’t breathe.

If they get hot and sweaty, they are in double trouble through risk of dehydration and because when they do cool down, their clothes and bedding are damp. Wool, on the other hand, is warm even when wet.

“It’s quite significant the number of homes we go to where they have nothing made from wool.”

Feilding knitter Lynda Allan is doing her bit to help, but she’s looking for more knitters and more wool supplies so that she can provide woollen garments for midwives to give away or sell for a small donation to families they see struggling to clothe a young baby.

“There’s a real need out there, and I see the midwives getting quite stressed.”

Mrs Allan says she understands that modern mums don’t want to dress their babies in frumpy styles of past generations, and she has patterns for making woollen knits that are fashionable.

She can also give advice on how to wash wool to dispose of the argument that man-made fabrics are so much easier to launder and keep in shape.

“I just want to help them stock up with something to give to those who desperately need it.”

She says donations for knitted items will be used to buy more quality woollen yarn to keep volunteer knitters in supplies.

Helpers can contact Mrs Allan on 323-4755.

I met Kelly in Lower Hutt when she was assigned my midwife. I was EXTREMLEY nervous about being a mum because it was my first child and I was only 17.

Kelly made sure that I was comfortable and that I was informed about everything that was happening and going to happen.

When it came to D-day I was 11 days overdue (they think), and really frustrated!! Kelly was there with me telling me about my progress. I ended up having a c-section at 12:49am my daughter Kady was born with a serious mop of hair on her head!!!

I am very grateful for Kelly’s help making the process so easy for me, being young and my first baby. I think shes an awesome midwife and reccommend her to any mum-2-be.

THANKS KELLY!!!

After finding out we were moving to Palmerston North from Blenheim at the beginning of this year, I set about trying to find a midwife for the birth of our first child. I was given Kelly’s contact details through the Maternity Resource Centre so thought I would give her a call. We met Kelly when I was 28 weeks pregnant and she had this way of making us feel at ease and that we could trust her yet still have a joke with her, extremely important to us considering what we were about to do becoming first time parents. I was missing the midwife I had in Blenheim and wished she could have moved up here with us for the birth but when we met Kelly that soon dissappeared, it was like she had been with us for the entire pregnancy. Kelly was the midwife for us. Her way of staying calm in a tricky situation was tested on April 21 when a 9lb 10oz baby boy decided he didn’t want to enter the world without some drama, Kelly remained calm and at no point did we feel there was any danger or anything wrong even when she calmly asked Jason to push the big red button on the wall (which so happened to cause 9 people to come tearing into the room at full speed).

We have missed the visits from Kelly (the last one was the hardest, if not a little emotional for me) and the advice she has given us over the time we were in her care, even the silly little questions that she always made time to answer and she always made sure we understood everything that was happening with the experience of having a child.

We definately recommend Kelly to anyone who is having a child in Palmerston North and if we are still here when it is time for number 2 to come along then we will be hunting Kelly down to be our midwife again.

Thank you Kelly for the opportunity to get to know you and for all you invaluable help with bringing Angus into our lives.

We miss you heaps and best of luck for the future.
Lots of love and hugs
Karina, Jason and Angus
